Card networks

Eight card networks.

Typed once into a hosted, PCI-compliant checkout. The card number never touches your site, and the invoice marks itself paid.

The largest card network in the world, accepted in more than 200 countries. For most clients it is simply the default way to pay an invoice.

Accepted virtually everywhere Visa is. Together the two form the backbone of card acceptance in almost every market you are likely to invoice.

American Express

Popular with business travellers and corporate accounts. Accepting it means never turning away a client who wants the invoice on their rewards card.

An everyday cashback favourite in the United States, with international reach through network alliances.

The card that started the industry. Niche now, but still recognised worldwide for travel and business spending.

The card of choice in Japan and widely held across East and Southeast Asia. Essential if you invoice Japanese clients.

The largest card network on earth by cards in circulation. Invaluable if your clients are in China or travelling from it.

A debit network used widely across Europe. Worth having when clients pay business expenses straight from a current account rather than on credit.

Digital wallets

Nine wallets.

One tap, no card number typed, confirmed on your client’s own device. This is where most invoices get paid fastest.

Your client pays with the card already in their iPhone or Mac, confirmed with Face ID. No card number typed, which is why it clears more often on a phone than a typed card does.

The same one-tap idea on Android and Chrome. The card lives in the client’s Google account, so there is nothing to type and nothing to mistype.

A wallet on Samsung devices, holding the client’s card the same way Apple Pay and Google Pay do.

No gateway PaySlate connects lists it

Your client pays from their PayPal balance or a card stored there, without handing card details to a business they may not have bought from before.

Widely used in the United States and reachable only through PayPal. Useful when you invoice individuals rather than finance departments.

A large United States payments app, particularly among younger clients. They approve the payment in an app they already have open.

Your client pays using the address and card already stored in their Amazon account, so there is no form to fill in.

One of the two dominant payment apps in China. If you invoice Chinese clients, this is often the method they expect to see.

The other dominant Chinese payment app, built into the messaging app most of the country uses daily.

Pay later

Two pay-later options.

Your client spreads the cost. You are paid in full at the time of purchase, so nothing about your cash flow changes.

Your client spreads the cost over instalments while you are paid in full up front. Klarna carries the risk, not you.

The same idea through Square’s ecosystem: the client pays in instalments, you are paid in full at the time of purchase.

Your client should never have to think about this.
